Spa Away The Blues?

Hola !

It's been a minute and I'd like to wish everyone a a wonderful holiday season. Holidays are filled with love, fun, family, partying, drinking....all of the festive things that mark this season of indulgence. The season is almost over , yet the biggest party is about to happen...New Year's Eve!

No review of a spa service here ...rather some practical advice as this is also the season where depression and suicide rates increase.

With the flurry of activity during the season, it's hard to recognize depression. Often those who are depressed may not know it and tend to pull away from others either deliberately or not. The holidays are a time of togetherness, yet one can be in a room full of people and feel alone.

This is the season of S.A.D. Seasonal Affective Disorder which is a form of depression that affects people around the same time each year - generally the winter. A lack of sunlight seems to be one of the causes.

This is not to suggest that anyone who is depressed during the winter has S.A.D. yet it is very real. Depression is very real. Recognizing it in oneself or others is also very real. There are a variety of other types of depression some are long term in duration and others quite sudden. Unchecked depression can lead to suicide.

Women seem to suffer more than men with S.A.D. Women are nurturers and often are taking care of others to the point of not taking care of themselves. Since this blog is about that very thing - take the time during the holiday to TAKE CARE OF YOU.

Appreciate and take the time for the little things. Find out what's really important to you. While I know spending time alone is a luxury for some -take the time for yourself this season. Give the gift of free time to someone else. Sometimes helping others can lift our spirits tremendously.

As the year closes, be thankful for all the things accomplished - and even the things not accomplished and pray for the ability to have another shot at getting it right.

Whether you are struggling with financial issues, health issues, relationship issues a holistic approach is one option in addressing those issues. Yes you can spend money and head to the nearest spa, but the reality is spa-ing is a wonderful relaxing way to de-stress but also is quite temporary.

Realizing you may need help and reaching out to others is always the first step. For those who are more adept at dealing and recognizing the signs of depression in others - assist if you can. Sometimes all people need is to know you care.

Spa how you feel...

Greetings!

Two posts in two days! I realize I've been slacking..

So today I'm not writing about a spa necessarily - but a Nail Salon..The Polish Bar in Brooklyn! My Sorority Sister owes the spot and it's way cool...and while I've been to the Myrtle Aveune location..nice but cramped..this is my first visit to the Vanderbuilt Avenue address... I'd have to say it's much more spacious and relaxing...

Now I know I should be writing about spas but there are some honorable mentions of places My friends and I frequent that I'll mention from time to time. This is a far cry from the neighborhood nail salon...There is no foot scrapping here! Y'all know what I mean....:)

I choose the paraffin pedicure and my feet felt fab after! I will say the test is when I get home to see if they still feel fab.. This spot is not for the faint of heart. It's pricey. I spent $50 for a pedicure..which would normally cost $20 with no paraffin.

Well my motto after my last spa visit .. You get what you pay for.. We shall see.

Just like not all spas are created equal neither are nail salons. The around the way nail spot offers a lot less and definitely more drama especially on a Saturday when folks act out trying to determine who's next..since many of the patrons are walk-ins (come on..how many of y'all know what I'm talking about?)

To avoid all that, the Polish Bar and others that are upscale ,do take walk-ins but they encourage appointments. They also take your debit/charge card over the phone; I suspect to charge a fee if you need to cancel.

The nail polish .. Not the cheap acetetone watered down stuff... Name brands..OPI and the like. What I like most was the website design.. With the ability to book your appointment online. I can appreciate the time savings here as I spent several times during the day trying to get through on the phone. Take a look for yourself:

www.polishbarbrooklyn.com

All in all a very good experience. The Polish Bar offers a host of other services...waxing, makeup, manicures brows and lashes . They even have spa parties on the menu!

FYI they don't deal with acrylic, so this is not the spot you want for your full set of nails...gel manicures are on the menu..

Spa-ing is really what you make of it ...find what works for you. Not always can one afford these extras in today's economy, yet often our decisions are simply those things we choose over other things. Since this pedicure wasn't really in my budget... And I feel I need some form of spa-ing to reduce my stress level... I will gladly spend no money this weekend and take the longest bubble bath ever!

Let your significant other give you the massage next time :) Let them run your bath water, or paint your toes for free!

Spa how you feel!!!

Until next time-please read, subscribe and tell your friends!

I'm a Spa Snob!

Greetings!

As promised here is the review of the spa I attended for spa week. Let me first say I'm not happy having to write a negative review..then again maybe it was just me and my expectations were too high. The spa is Karen's Body Beautiful in Brooklyn. I think this was really a case of buyer beware. While I was running to get there, (so I'm not late and reduce my time as their literature states)...at 5:00pm I was still waiting and there appeared to be no one there....my appointment was 4:30....

This was the first spa I'd ever been to where there was no paperwork completed to assess if there was any medical conditions ..I was thoroughly surprised. Someone please let me know if they have had this experience before....

I was also surprised to see there were no lockers to store my belongings ...there was a clothes closet, but it didn't fit my purse... Hmmm..so my purse was on the floor in the ONE room for massages...

I choose the $79 special which I thought would include a hydrotherapy bath. I did have a bath..(in one of those tanks that they close you in and the jet streams water on you). Yes it was heavenly...With really great scents but it was more like an exfoliation...alas no real massage...in this case I got what I paid for (mind you the literature says something different).

My reflexology treatment was $49 and it could have been better but I will say the technician was very knowledgeable in relation to how massaging parts of the feet are related to the rest of the body... It wasn't awful .. Just not enough power...oh.. and this was the same technician who did my hydrotherapy/massage..umm..exfoliation (I broke my cardinal rule I mentioned in another post about having the same technician perform more than one service).

Now the pedicure wasn't bad...I was astonished, however, when I booked they had not included the pedicure but instead a manicure..then I was told I'd have to wait for the technician to clean the station and it would take 20 minutes... She gave major attitude saying I was supposed to get a manicure and argued with me! For those that don't know, I get my nails silk wrapped and many of these new "spas" deal with natural nails...so I asked if I could get the special with the pedicure instead.... I was told yes...

Imagine my surprise now that it's 7:00pm and still have a pedicure to go! The final straw was the pedicure technician was on HER cell phone the entire time....

There's just something incredibly wrong with hearing the traffic outside and the music thumping upstairs while I'm get a pseudo massage....

To make matters worse - disposable panties(and thongs!),bra and slippers... I've never seen anything like it. Of course as someone who is fairly business savy, I do understand this keeps expenses low..but...They are just...Well..Cheap.

Needless to say I won't be back.

So what exactly makes me a spa snob? I'm used to a few set of basic (ok maybe they are not basic??) formalities when "spa-ing"...

1. Tranquility - I expect to be taken away from the daily grind where I can relax, de-Stress and be at peace.

2. I expect my service to start relatively on time. My time is valuable as is everyone else's.

3. Can a girl have a locker? With some REAL robes and slippers? And shower caps? Shampoo? Soap? Scrunchies for my hair? Yeah I never really used the stuff offered in the other spas but I'm used to have them at my disposal!

So the motto here really is you get what you pay for...and always be prepared! My bestie had given me a spa kit a while ago..and another one as my bridesmaid gift so I was prepared...:)

I will say after thinking about how to end this post ... I like large facilities with all the bells and whistles. Make sure when deciding to spa if the small intimate setting or the large setting matters to you.

Please provide your feedback with your own spa stories..subscribe and tell a friend!

My "Life Class"

Greetings!

So spa week is officially over...and I do have a review of a new spa I went to..but that will have to wait :) This post is an ode to Oprah ..and her new show Life Class. I mentioned before I am not necessarily a fan - but I just had an ah-ha moment watching this show for the first time and thought I'd share...

Beauty... What it means ..how we women (yes this post is for us women) deal with it (as well as it when it diminishes) is so connected to almost everything we do. (ok for those who don't agree..then you can skip this post..count yourself amoung the lucky ones!) And guess what? Even the title of my blog speaks to how some of us see ourselves... We are in a society that promotes youth and beauty and when we don't fit that image ( whether we are born with it or buy it) our stress levels can increase. It places a value on those things that are transient and temporary.

I got to thinking Spa-ing and pampering is a wonderful thing .. but deciding who we are and being HAPPY with who and what we see in the mirror is most important. There are spas that I haven't written about (yet) that women run to for Botox treatments, Collagen injections and almost anything to make us look younger. Some people will use these services as a means of being in denial about something within them. Just turn on the " Real Housewives of.." whatever.

While I've been blessed not to look my age, I still have a fear of aging. Trust me..I do.
My ah-ha moment came tonight when I realized I've never really defined myself as beautiful and never connected how I look ( ok...save for my eyes..lol) to my core being. I've always known I'm much more. So why do I fear aging? Perhaps I need the next Life Class to answer that.(y'all didn't really think you'd get an answer here?? Ha! )

Spa-ing and pampering should not become the means by which you try and forgot who you are.(well ok temporarily...)

What I am sure of is that spa-ing and pampering is a wonderful escape that can ease the stress of everyday life but we must do the work to become comfortable with who we are.

Tell me... Do you use spa-ing and pampering to take the place of the work you need to do internally? Or is your spa the way to retreat from the world for much needed "me" time?

Please share your thoughts..subscribe and tell a friend!

Back to regular programming next time!

26 Days Until Spa Week!

Greetings!

What a glorious day this is! It's the last remnants of summer and on to my favorite time of the year...Fall :) Fall is full of fabulous fashion...boots, jackets, skirts.. but most of all...SPA WEEK!! Yay!!

So for all you who don't know and haven't read my very first blog entry - Spa Week is the event that occurs two times a year - in the fall and spring. The fabulous thing about spa week is ALL the services are $50 each! It occurs all across the country - so check the website and tell your friends near and far...and also tell them about my blog ;)

Spa Week this year is October 10th-16th. If you haven't had a chance to check out the website please do so.... www.spaweek.com

The best thing about Spa Week is the prices! If you're a novice, a "spa-diva" in training, and have never "spa-ed" before it's the perfect time to try of a variety of services to determine if "spa-ing" is for you. If you are an experienced "spa-diva" then you can get your spa on in new and affordable places!

My all-time favorite spa isn't on the list of spas for Spa Week any more - so I attend Spa Week in the quest to try different services at different spas. I'm planning a facial, body scrub, reflexology, and massage. Sounds like a lot? Well these prices add up to one Hot Stone Massage at regular prices! Not sure what spas I'll hit up...but if you are interested you should book your appointmemt early as the spa services can fill up pretty fast.

Some rules during Spa Week:

1. Make sure you read the fine print and cancellation policy. Because of the low prices, some policies may be more stringent than they normally are.

2. Once you find a spa on the list - check out the spa's own website. Often I go to new spa's on advice from others, but when I have none, I check out the website to see what services are offered. I know this is crazy - but I also look for how the website makes me feel. "Spa-ing" should be a tranquil activity and I like websites that can convey this (kudos to great marketing folks....).

3. Take a tour of the facility. While I've never done this - I think it's a great idea if you need to feel comfortable or have questions that you feel are better asked in person.

4. Tipping is still expected. The standard tip is usually 20% - however tipping is really about the service rendered.

5. Be early - 15 minutes at least so you can change your clothes and not cut into your own time or someone after you.

6. Not all spas offer the services you want. There will be no doubt that I might be trying 4 different spas because often there are limited services offered at the spa week prices.

7. Try a department store spa. I noticed this year Lord and Taylor is on the list and I think I might try their salon services if they offer what I'm interested in. Though not on the list, Nordstrom has fantastic spa services so if you want to pay full price - check out Nordstrom's.

8. As always men are included too :) There are salons that offer men's services so ladies check the lists and see what you can give the special man in your life(since men consider this a treat - it's going to be rare they book their own massages unless they have in the past...)

Well that's it for now! I'll be updated as we move closer to Spa Week ! I'm soooo excited!!

Ciao!

Happy Father's Day!!

Hola!

It's been a minute since my last entry...the j.o.b. that pays the B.I.L.L.S has been keeping me busy! In an ode to Father's Day - this one is for the men! (or is it really?)

I asked a friend recently how does he "pamper" himself? Funny thing about the male species - when things "sound" too feminine, another title is created :)

So this friend doesn't think of taking care of himself as pampering, but suggested getting a fresh cut, some new gear and perhaps going to that restaurant he wouldn't normally go to his as close as it gets to "pampering". Pampering from his perspective is also what's done on vacation, getting that massage special treatment that is reversed for "special occasions."

I am totally amazed by this and asked a few other males friends and all the answers where similar. Am I the only one?

Here is my attempt to dispel that notion. While it's cool to be on that fabulous vacation or have your partner take on the role of your personal massage therapist - a little "pampering" that won't end a fantastic bedroom (or anywhere else you choose) session is an amazing thing! ;)

Just how does this work for men? Often the best way to treat your man and have him enjoy pampering is to do it for him! Couples massages are a fantastic way to introduce the man in your life to the benefits of "spa-ing". This usually means the massage is performed on both of you in the same room. Ladies, this is a perfect way to get your spa on - and treat your man!

Let's not forget that men can get facials too - this one is tricky - can't say I know any men who have had or want to have a facial. Well it's still possible...hit me up if you know any men who've had a facial and are willing to talk about it!

Men also get mani/pedi's...or manicures and pedicures - as evidenced by my interactions in my local nail salon. There are some men that take care of their hands and feet as well as any women!

I would suggest you find out if the man in your life likes surprises and would be interested in "spa-ing" before you book the appointment!

If your man - husband, dad, brother, father, baby daddy is interested in either letting you treat him like the King that he is - or treating himself like that King, here are some great spas with Father's Day specials:

Oasis Day Day Spa

www.oasisdayspanyc.com/june2011

There is an array of services that are offered including a spa package with golfing included!

Body By Brooklyn

Although I received an email with Father's Day Specials, I don't see the specials listed on their website so you may want to call to verify there are Father's Day Specials.

Cynergy Day Spa

Here's another interesting site that lists spas in NYC that have Father's Day Specials - I can't vouch for these since I've never been to the places on the list - but they are included as other options.

And finally for those of you outside of NYC - my other great go to spa resource lists some other fabulous deals across the country...

Living Your Best Life...

Hola!

It's funny when you begin to write - you never know the exact path you will wind up going...so I thought I would be sitting here writing about the next set of spas I wanted to mention...and I'll get to that..in my next post ...promise :)

Tonight however I am sooo in an Oprah mood I need to write about what she has been preaching for 25 years. While I never watched her show religiously... and picked up her magazine on occasion when I wanted to actively engage in doing work on me - I was profoundly moved and cried a bunch watching her last show tonight. Not because she was leaving - but because I was actually Being Still...and in the moment and it moved me.

Funny my last entry was about Being Still - I was angry when I was writing those words - no reason to share why - but I knew instinctively it was what I needed to do to heal. It really does become clear your path when you Become Still and listen.

Doing what you love - your calling - as Oprah called it is something I've struggled with for a long time. This blog - while about those things that make me incredibly happy - was born out of the desire to find the peace and wellness needed because I often wonder if I'm living my best life.

As I take my journey to find out (is it writing, teaching, listening?) my only thought tonight is hopefully to inspire others and give back (ok Oprah didn't teach me this...lol I've always given back) knowing that the path to clarity, health and wellness begins not with the manicures, pedicures, scrubs, facials, exfoliations,or the gym memberships (ok those things help) but with the Art of Being Still and Living Your Best Life.

To all the Oprah naysayers - listen and hear (yes they are two separate things) to the message - not the messenger. :)

The Art of Being Still

Hola!

I hope this finds everyone well! It's lunch time here at the job that pays the bills and while I typically work through lunch, I decided I want to write today (ok so I started this yesterday and it's now dinner time but whatever...).

While this blog is mostly about spas - it really is about health and wellness and how to fit it into your lifestyle. So today I'm disucssing how and why we need to be still.

A friend of mine said if I spend so much time tending to everyone else - what do I do for me? And who tends to me? Good question...for which I had no available answer lol (for shame I know - but it is what it is).

So after a week of working like a proverbial dog to graduate students (for those who don't know, my day job I tend to the money of an art school) my feet, back and everything else hurt after standing most of the day at graduation (congrats to the Class of 2011!).

I came home and prepared the quick rememdy I love best - a hot bubble bath, some vino, my Color Nook...and read. For three hours I turned off the TV, phone(yeah I still have a land line...),cell phone (ok so I didn't turn off the cell phone but it was in the charger and not in the bathroom lol) and didn't turn on my laptop at all. I can't tell you how long it's been since I've just chilled.

While reading - it occurred to me that it's been a minute since I was actually still - still enough to hear that little voice in my head that sends me on my next path. Still enough to hear that little voice that instructs me how and what I should be doing with my life. Still enough to hear...______________ YOU fill in the blank.

All too often we are all on auto-pilot taking care of all the needs in a day...work, children, spouses, bills, relationships - simply trying to juggle it all.

I hope men are reading this too as it's not just women that have these issues. I think I'll ask some male friends - how they are handling this issue and report back :)

Being still means being in a place that you can ultimately relax your mind, body, and spirit.

We are an ever increasingly techno-mobile society and as a result some of us are chained to mobile devices, laptops, games, etc....

There really is an ART to being still. This same friend suggests I'm addicted to my IPhone which I have to admit I am. So here's a suggestion - if you can't turn off the phone (I never do...) then put it down. Turn off anything that creates noise - at least temporarily and I bet there will still be noise in your head (no you're not crazy lol) for a little while. The goal is to rid the noise in your head. How many times have you stopped, turned off the TV, getting ready for bed and your mind is STILL racing? This is what I mean by being still. Getting rid of the racing - and thinking of NOTHING.

My big sister has always meditated - and frankly I've gone back to it. It is just one way to be still. It really is hard at first - yet there's a piece of mind that I have after meditating that I can't find anywhere else - even church. Church for me is a completely different piece of mind.

The point is - stillness is important. It allows us to achieve balance which is what we most want in our very busy lives. Am I making an assumption? Do you want/need balance?

I just finsihed reading Russell Simmons New Book "Super Rich" and I would encourage you to take a glance at it.

It also helps to rememember that sometimes we all need someone to talk to...and NO not always our friends. Friends serve a speacial place in our relationships - yet sometimes we need more.

So todays' spa I'm highlighting is a mental-health spa:

The Chiron Institute offers a holistic approach to therapy and I'm an advocate for therapy - particularly those services that don't treat clients with medications.

The benefits of therapy are many. I know...I know many of us don't think we have "those" types of problems , yet I will say that I truly believe therapy can and does work.

Some of the services offered include: Feng Shui, Reiki, Chakra Balancing, Foral Vibrations, and Pain Management.

For more information: http://www.chiron-institute.com

email: Chirontherapy@Chiron-Institute.com

Find what helps you to be still- to think, to dream, to wonder, but most of all be you!

Ciao!

Happy Mother's Day!!!

Hola!

It's been a minute I know but the work that pays the bills has me busier than ever! For those that don't know I started spa-ing (is that a word? probably not but I'm making it one...) many years ago and continue it primarily 'cause it feels good!

The other reason is because it keeps me sane! Working two jobs - one I absolutely love (can you guess which one?) keeps my stress level fairly high yet spa-ing is one of the ultimate ways to relax!

So in an ode to all Mothers....this entry is for you! Happy Mother's Day!! Yes I'm late - I know...unless there is a cancellation somewhere it's almost impossible to pick up the phone and get a massage (or any other type of service) tomorrow.

However there are 364 other days of the year to treat your mom - or someone else's mom, or the mother of your children...special :)

S0 - here's some of my favorite spas...you can always call on the chance there is an opening for those last minute folk that have yet to figure out what to do...

Eden Day Spa
388 Broadway, New York NY 10013
http://edenspany.com/08/#newhome
212-226-0515

This is my all time favorite spa! I love the Lava Stone Massage... you must try this!! I first discovered this spa during http://www.spaweek.com/deals/ and went because it was not far from where I worked and $50 for any massage is a steal in NYC.

That was several years ago. I've also had the Deep Tissue Massage, and the Swedish Massage. I've had the signature facial, and the Sandy Beach Scrub. There's a whole other host of services so check out the link! If you decide to go - make a mention of my blog! The technicians here are amazing! While the ambiance is incredible and by far this is where I keep coming back because the massages are great! They also have spa packages and some that include lunch.

So I suppose I should be mentioning pricing here....the thing is - prices may change frequently so it's a safer bet to check the website out yourself.
I will say this - the Lava Stone (Hot Stone) is typically the most expensive massage at a spa. Prices for the lava stone massage run approximately $120 - $200 depending on the length of time the service is performed. I've noticed they also they have express massage service which typically is under $100. The cheapest is $25 for 10 minute express massage. Now that's a great deal!

Give me your feedback if you decide to go!

Body By Brooklyn
275 Park Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11205
http://www.bodybybrooklyn.com/massage.htm

Well..well..well...I'm not sure what to say about this one. The massage was mediocre - I had a Swedish Massage (does it matter that the technician was a brutha who was fone??) and ultimately what you go for, the location is under the BQE - I understand there is now parking for a mere $5...is anything free anymore in NYC??

BUT...what a fabulous ambiance this place has! The spa is also a lounge - yes a lounge as in bar and lounge...and yes I was able to sit at the bar in my robe and sip martinis (and made friends with a gentleman at the bar who brought my girlfriends and I drinks - hehe). I went with my girlfriends to this spa (I think it was for a girls spa day celebrating a birthday) and although I work a couple of blocks away, had never heard of this spa. It's definitely a unique concept and the spa is gorgeous. They offer brunch, membership passes to the wet lounge (sauna, whirlpool, steambath, pool) and a host of other services including a restaurant! They accommodate spa parties so this might be an interesting location... while the massage wasn't all that - we did have a great time here.....I'll check with my friends and see how they enjoyed it. As usual spa prices vary, but the service ranges in price as of today $95/60 min. $140/90 min.

Don't forget to mention my blog and report back what you think!

Spa Toccare - Borgata Hotel Resort and Spa
http://www.theborgata.com/Main.cfm?Category_1=6000
Atlantic City, New Jersey
609-307-1000

What a spa this is!!! I felt like royalty here! Why isn't this my favorite spa? Because it's not that close. To spend a weekend away, to relax with your man, your friends or on your lonely - this place is fabulous! I mentioned this spot before...

The service was excellent and they often have spa deals. I had a $99 massage - not a full body (It was head, upper body, and feet) for 60 minutes and I did feel a little cheated but the brutha ( I was pleasantly surprised) was excellent! If you've never had a foot massage you must run and get one now!! OMG - complete heaven!

Men...pay attention - you can do things things for the lady in your life for free!! Trust me she will thank you for it!

Most services here are over $100 so it is rather pricey. What caught my eye however is for $275 for 80 minutes you can have the massage in your room! Talk about luxurious! One word of caution - there's a hefty price to pay here if you have not canceled your treatment by 6:30 the DAY BEFORE...it's 100% of the service!

Sage Spa
405 Fifth Avenue 2nd Fl.
Brooklyn, New York 11215

In compiling my research I can across this spa - especially for a Sorority member of mine who lives in the neighborhood of Park Slope :) While I have not been to this spa - I love the neighborhood and will be booking an appointment next week! Who wants to come with me? What I like immediately about the website is the calming colors (say what you want aesthetics are important) and the offer a variety of specials. I'm especially interested in the Sinus Aromatherapy for $40...I've spent more on less...I'll report back!

As always, if you've been to the spas listed I'd love to hear your reviews...and if you go...don't forget to mention my blog!

Happy Mother's Day!!!

SPA 101

Hola!

I'm working in Manhattan today - hosting a graduation fair and while the student traffic is sporadic ( I should've let my staff work this event) I decided to spend some of my down time posting (since I forgot to bring any other work with me...)

I'm still gathering my information on pricing and services for spas but here's a breakdown on some general information - Read Spa 101....

Check a few spas out first. One of the best resources is always word of mouth yet I love this website called www.spafinder.com . Here you'll find all things SPA....Ahhhh...:) You can learn about destination spas, day spa, get gift certificates, and learn all about Spa 101.

Spa 101 Tips

1. My bestie many years ago gave me a great gift which I use to this day. She gave me a spa kit - which included spa sandals, pedicure kit and something else that escapes me at the moment :) I use the sandals the most. A word to the wise - if you don't bring your own slippers (sandals) they will provide them for you. Sometimes I'm squeemish about such things..so this really is a matter of personal preference. They also provide robes and lockers to store your personal items.

2. Do you want to spa in the buff (nude)? This is also a matter of personal taste. The good news - spa folks (called therapists) make you feel at home and are aware of of those who may feel uncomfortable in the nude. You can of course wear undergarments - and some spas even provide you disposable ones! (who knew!) I learned this at my most recent spa trip at the luxurious Borgata Hotel Spa and Casino in Atlantic City.

www.theborgata.com

This is one of the best spas I have even been to! OMG...they provide disposable undergarments, shower caps, deodorant, hair spray....everything a girl needs! I was completely pampered here - and it didn't hurt that I had requested a man - and got the most handsome brutha! :) He was completely professional and it was the best massage ever! The Spa at Borgata is called Spa Toccare - and happened to be voted the Reader's Choice Best Spa for 2010 by Spa Finder - the very link I provided earlier. The great thing here is the spa was also voted the best in the male spa experience as well. So here's to the ladies and gents - go here if you can!!

3. Cell Phones are NO BUENO! Ok so I am addicted to my new IPhone - and a good friend (who I talk to almost everynight) makes fun of me about it....however this is the one place my IPhone doesn't go. Remember this blog is about pampering oneself...sometimes it's really hard NOT to be connected to our very mobile, social network sites oriented world. However, I leave the IPhone in my locker so I have an 60 or 90 minutes(or whatever I purchased) of free uninterruted time.

4. Conversation anyone? Well this also is a matter of personal taste. Do you want conversation while you are relaxing? I find after the introductions some therapists will ask if you want conversation or silence....I prefer silence....and usually fall alsleep if it was good! During this visit I was actully snoring LOL! On a different note, do tell your therapist how you would like your massage. Most ask if the force they use is too much or too little. Let them know.

5. The BIG sell. Here lies a drawback of some spas. After you are finished whatever the service, almost always is the attempted sale of the products that were used during your visit. Funny at Borgata this didn't happen and I was pleasantly surprised. So keep in mind that there maybe a sales pitch at the end. Just say NO - otherewise you could be spending money on products you really don't like or need.

6. Take off your jewelry. This one really annoys me. I have nails (yes they are mine that are silk wrapped) and it's difficult to get the jewelry on and off - however for a full range of motion during the massage it's best to remove it.

7. Bring Pets? NO. Why do some feel the need to bring their pets everywhere?? Not unless the the pets are going to their own spa day...and yes there are spas for pets....

8. Wearing Perfume - Now this one is interesting. I can't say that I've ever thought about it because I wear perfume almost everyday yet it's probably not a good idea to wear perfume to the spa in case the therapist is allergic. Again a matter of personal preference.

More Later...gotta go back to work!

Wellness in a hurry.....

Here's to an end to a very busy day. (Cheers!)I think I'm liking this whole blogging concept as a way to release stress :)

For those who know me, I'm really good at listening and helping others but rarely do I share myself with the same gusto. Why? Who knows..it's just not my thing. I have however figured out that my stress level as a result of me not sharing my inner most thoughts that easy, takes a toll.

So while I gather my lists for the next blog entry (which I'm thinking will focus on spa pricing and maybe even some local spots for Mother's day - don't hold me to it though since I write what comes to me...) I want to spend some time on how to be mentally well.

After a long and hectic day.. I headed to the gym, came home and made a spinach salad (for those of you who read my tweet earlier - like you really care..) and here I sit blogging. Interesting enough I find this relaxing. I'm a Knick fan and they will be immortalized in my entry as they were losing with 13 sec left to Boston so back to writing I go....

My thoughts for the day: Decide what makes you feel good. While I'm not sure what I'm doing at this moment qualifies as pampering myself - I think it does since almost every night without fail I'm logging in and checking on my online classes I teach or grading papers. This is the first night in a long time my laptop has been used for something other than work!

I've always wanted to write - not that I knew how, I mean as in got a degree in English Literature or anything , but I think I express myself well enough and can tell a fairly good story....

And it feels good. None of these concepts are new to anyone yet we often need to be reminded to take time for ourselves. Focus on the FREE things you can do to feel better..pampered. I mentioned bubbles baths. This is a great stress reliever and offers probably the best chance of quite time if you have a house full of people. Alone? Together? whichever...:)

My other favorite way to relax and pamper myself is with a great book. I'm an avid reader.... I finally bought a NOOK as I have way too many books in my house. I need a garage sale.

But there's something about writing....I've always kept a diary...ok as we get older it's called journaling. I remember the time when I was about 15 years old(and the only real time I got in trouble) I had a good friend who I used to hang out with after school...I went to her house and neglected to call my mom. After several hours my mom called the cops and yes they found me....by reading my Diary!

I stopped writing for a long time after that incident lol.

I will say however I started several years ago and when I feel terribly stressed or out of sorts, I write. I'm working on a book...hopefully...it's really slow going.

So to all those out there that forget to put themselves first - take a "Time Out" for you. Since the weather is improving - get outdoors. Exercise, write, sleep, spend time with your boo... DO SOMETHING.

Sometimes the best things in life are truly free.

Next up - Spa pricing and services

Princess for a Day....

So I missed Spa Week....just in case you didn't know, one of the best spa deals in the city is Spa Week. For $50 you can get an array of treatments at some great spas in the city.

Here's the link http://www.spaweek.com

Spa Week happens in April and October each year. You will need to use your email address or create one in order to log in. You can also use your zip code too. The good news..Spa Week is held across the Country so depending on where you live you may be able to book an appointment in your own city or when traveling!

I discovered day spas many years ago when I was looking for something to do for my mom's 70th birthday. At that time, day spas were high priced in Manhattan, not too many in the outer boroughs so we went to this fab spot(of course I don't remember the name but alas it's out of business anyway) on 5th Avenue and 53rd Street, and I treated my mom like the Pampered Princess she is :) We spent the day...had lunch...we did facials, massages, mani/pedi's, and even hair. (OK so mom was not impressed with the hair stylist...and neither was I).

After that day, I realized I loved pampering me and made a vow to myself that while it's great for a man to spoil and pamper me - I like doing it for me! So I set my sights on learning some basics about the spa industry...

Like...there are Day Spas and Spa Vacations...as I continue blogging I'll be discussing the benefits and pitfalls of both.

So be a Princess for a Day! Check out Spa Week when it rolls around again...or check the list of Day Spas and call and ask if they have any extended promotions!

Some basics when going to Day Spas:

1. If participating in Spa Week and because the the price of the treatments, you'll
usually need to book early.

2. Be aware that the specials only include the service. Tipping is required. There
will be someone who doesn't believe this, however having worked in service
industries, it is a sign of excellent or bad service. Ok perhaps not
required..but expected. The tipping standard for the spa industry is 15-20% of
the bill. Of course this is dictated by the area of the country you live in as
well as the service. Here's some info for tipping:

http://www.ehow.com/how_2152713_tip-spa-services.html

3. There is usually a cancellation fee involved if you fail to call and cancel! The
standard is you can call up to 24 hours in advance to cancel. Make sure to check
with the individual spa however as cancellation fees can range and be of
significant cost to you.

4. When making an appointment decide if gender matters. I truly don't care if my
massage is given to me by a man or woman. Although I do prefer women...most spas
will ask this question and in case the don't - decide when making your
appointment. It really is about what you feel comfortable with. I can't say that
men automatically give better massages - I've had some men and women who were
both fab!

5. Arrive 15-20 minutes earlier than your appointment. The reason is simply - there
is paperwork to fill out ( no spa wants liability issues on their hands so they
have you fill out a questionnaire for health related issues) and you need time
to change.

More next time....

What is Pampering?

So what is Pampering? Why do it? IMHO (in my humble opinion) pampering is simply taking care of oneself. Funny how many think this can lead to (or is the same as) being spoiled ( it can) , high maintenance (it can), or conceited (it can). However, I'm not talking about the over indulgences that the image of pampering  creates...I'm talking about the things that some of us choose to do to make us feel better.  The reality is however that all women can indulge and pamper themselves ( or have someone else do it!)

A word on pampering for men...or the men in the women's lives that are reading this....men want and need to be pampered too. That means everything  I write is applicable to men? Women take notice!

I titled my blog The Pampered Princess because I do love to be pampered, and I don't necessarily wait for someone to pamper me.

My motto is "Do You".However the method - creating work/life balance is about finding what is right for you.

So some basic tenants of  The Pampered Princess:

1. To thine own self be true. Simply put - find out what really makes you happy. If it's reading...crave some time out for yourself and read that book you been meaning to read.

2. Pampering doesn't always have to cost money. One of my favorite ways to pamper myself is a hot steamy bath, scented candles and music.Think of inexpensive ways to pamper yourself while you save for the ultimate pamper party.

3. Pamper by yourself and in groups. Ok this may seem contradictory but sometimes the best was to pamper oneself is to be by oneself.  Crave out the "me" by prioritizing and making lists and include in you lists some "me" time.

 4. One last note on being true to oneself...if you are in a job or career you do not like or has run it's course ....this is the ultimate stressor and you may find yourself applying many of the tools offered in an effort to find balance. I highly recommend analyzing the "fit" of that job....

More later.....

Why Pamper?

Lady Y here ready and willing to assist all those who have never tried pampering themselves! This is my first go at blogging and i'm excited and nervous, Why? Because although I know I talk alot ...one is never sure folks you don't know will read your stuff!

A lil' 'bout me...I hail from NYC specifically the Borough of Queens... yet I am Brooklyn raised...and it is currently where I work. My days are spent stressing over financials in a college and by night I'm a Adjunct Professor.  I'm involved in a host of other things that make life downright stressful at times. Can you say major stress?

My friends and family keep me sane - yet this blog was developed because of the things I learned in life's journey that aid in helping the work/life balance. How many reading this have problems in this area?

Managing work, home, children, relationships, community service ...all can take a toll on us. So here's to helping anyone reading find a better way to maintain the  work/life balance.
